Makuake Project Vol. 5: The Beginning of the Wa Modern Wear Series

Our fifth Makuake project marked the beginning of a new journey.

After years of creating kimono-inspired Sukajan jackets, we decided to take a bold step forward and introduce the first piece in our new “Wa Modern Wear Series” — a unisex pullover crafted from upcycled kimono textiles.

Every kimono carries a story.

Many of the fabrics we work with have been carefully preserved for decades, passed down through generations, and woven with the artistry and spirit of Japanese craftsmanship. Yet countless beautiful kimono remain unworn, hidden away despite the memories and history they hold.

Our mission has always been to give these treasured textiles a new life.

With this project, we wanted to create something even more accessible for modern lifestyles. We focused on simplicity, comfort, and versatility — a garment that could be worn effortlessly by anyone, regardless of age, gender, or fashion style. The one-size design encourages freedom of expression, while the lightweight silhouette makes layering and everyday wear easy and enjoyable.

This project was different from anything we had done before.

We wondered whether people would embrace this new direction. We felt excitement, hope, and uncertainty as the launch approached. However, the response exceeded all expectations. The support we received confirmed that many people around the world share our belief that traditional craftsmanship should not remain locked away in the past, but continue to live and evolve in the present.

The Wa Modern Wear Series is more than a clothing collection.

It is a bridge between tradition and contemporary life. It is a celebration of sustainability, creativity, and cultural heritage. Most importantly, it is our commitment to ensuring that the beauty of kimono textiles continues to inspire future generations.

This first pullover was only the beginning.

The journey of the Wa Modern Wear Series has just begun, and we look forward to exploring new possibilities for kimono upcycling with all of you.
